Natural Stone Education

What Is Travertine Stone?

Travertine stone is a form of sedimentary limestone that forms over thousands of years near mineral springs and geothermal hot springs. As calcium carbonate-rich water rises and evaporates, it leaves behind layer upon layer of mineral deposits creating the stone's distinctive banded texture, warm earth tones, and naturally porous surface. The result is a material that carries geological history in every slab, with variations in color, veining, and texture that no two pieces share.

Unlike manufactured tiles, travertine stone develops its character through nature itself. That's why it has been a prized building material from the Roman Colosseum to the Mediterranean villas that inspire so many South Florida architectural styles today.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Your questions answered by our experts

What is the difference between travertine and limestone?

Both travertine and limestone are calcium carbonate stones with similar earth tones, but they form differently. Travertine is sedimentary, formed near mineral springs  giving it natural porosity that actually improves traction when wet. Limestone is metamorphic: denser and more uniform, but it does not manage water as effectively. For pool decks and wet areas in South Florida, travertine's porosity is an advantage, not a flaw.

How does travertine compare to porcelain tile for an outdoor patio in Florida?

Travertine significantly outperforms porcelain in Florida's outdoor conditions. Porcelain glazes fade under Miami's intense UV exposure, the surface becomes dangerous when wet, and it cracks more easily under heavy loads. Travertine's mineral colors never fade, it becomes less slippery when wet, and it can withstand up to 8,000 lbs per square inch of compressive force. The lifetime cost of travertine is almost always lower once replacement costs are factored in.

What is premium grade vs. standard grade travertine  and which should I buy?

Premium select grade travertine has minimal surface holes, higher density, and is ideal for driveways, entryways, and commercial spaces. Standard grade has more visible natural holes with a rustic character and a lower price point. Florida's climate is actually ideal for standard grade  there are no freeze-thaw cycles, which is the primary risk in colder states. For moderate-traffic pool decks and patios in South Florida, standard grade performs beautifully at significant cost savings.

Does travertine need to be sealed in Florida's humid climate?

Yes  sealing is essential in South Florida. Travertine's natural porosity means it must be sealed at installation and resealed periodically. Florida's high humidity, heavy summer rainfall, and proximity to saltwater make this especially important. Use a penetrating stone sealer  not a topical coating  and plan to reseal every one to three years depending on traffic and exposure. The team at New Stone Age can advise on the right sealer for your specific application.

What finishes does travertine come in and which is best for pool decks?

Travertine comes in four main finishes: Honed (smooth matte, ideal for interior floors and hallways), Polished (high-gloss and reflective, best for feature walls and formal entryways), Brushed (wire-textured and naturally slip-resistant  excellent for outdoor use), and Tumbled (aged with rounded edges, perfect for Mediterranean-style pool decks and garden paths). For South Florida pool decks, brushed or tumbled finish is recommended for maximum safety and visual character.
